The significance of the project:
This road represents a highly significant road communication route, which connects Serbia with Hungary and Romania. The location of the section demonstrates its importance and role in the region from an economic perspective. The alignment of the future expressway in question will provide a connection between Bačka and Banat and central and western Serbia via the Belgrade – Subotica motorway.
Status of the project:
The Chinese company, the previos contractor, has finished a part of previous works on Section 1 for Phase 1, that were not included in the bid of the new contractor “AzVirt“.On 18.03.2026 the Framework Commercial Agreement on Design and Construction of the expressway, border crossing Bački Breg – Sombor – Kula – Vrbas – Srbobran, was signed between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Azerbaijan company “AzVirt”, branch Belgrade. On 18.03.2026 the Relevant Annex 1 of the Framework Commercial Agreement on Design and Construction of the expressway, border crossing Bački Breg – Sombor – Kula – Vrbas – Srbobran was signed between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Azerbaijan company “AzVirt”, branch Belgrade. The contractor commences the works for Phase 1 (date of commencement) once all preconditions for the commencement date have been met.
Investment value:
The contracted value is 240,384,288.96 EUR for the construction of Section 1 and design of Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Source of finance:
The Contractor pre-finances the execution of the works from the loan funds in the form of an advance payment. Once the necessary conditions have been met, the project will be financed from the funds provided under the Loan Agreement, from the budget of the Republic of Serbia, or from other sources of financing.
Project description:
The alignment of the expressway has been designed from the border crossing with Hungary (Bački Breg) via Sombor – Kula – Vrbas – Srbobran – Bečej – Novi Bečej – Kikinda to the border crossing with Romania (Srpska Crnja), and is divided into the following sections:
- Section 1: Bački breg – interchange „Sombor”, 22.7 km in length;
- Section 2: Interchange „Sombor“ – Kula municipality boundary, 18.1 km in length;
- Section 3: Kula municipality boundary – Vrbas municipality boundary, 26.4 km in length;
- Section 4: Vrbas municipality boundary – Srbobran municipality boundary/A1/E75 – Vrbas Interchange, 14.3 km in length;
- Section 5: Srbobran municipality boundary/А1/Е75-interchange Vrbas – Bečej municipality boundary, 12.7 km in length;
- Section 6: Bečej municipality boundary – Novi Bečej municipality boundary, river Tisa, 18.8 km in length;
- Section 7: Novi Bečej municipality boundary river Tisa – Kikinda City boundary (Danube – Tisa – Danube Canal, Kikinda Canal), 35.1 km in length;
- Section 8: Kikinda City boundary (Danube – Tisa – Danube Canal, Kikinda Canal) –
interchange „Kikinda East” and from the interchange „Kikinda Istok” in direction of Nakovo, 17. 7 km in length and
- Section 9: from the interchange „Kikinda East” to the border crossing with Romania (Srpska Crnja), 19.7 km in length.
The construction of 46 bridges (over canals and road crossings), 34 overpasses, 5 underpasses, and 35 culverts is planned, along with 12 grade-separated intersections (interchanges), namely: Sombor, Kljajićevo, Sivac, Crvenka, Kula, Vrbas West, Vrbas North, Vrbas East, Vrbas E-75, Srbobran North, Turija, and Kikinda East. In addition, the construction of 13 at-grade roundabouts is planned.
